Women Mental Health Matters!

Women are known for putting others first. They are known to take the load of responsibilities, concerns and worries of others on their shoulders, especially when it comes to their families.  Many of them shy to come out of their shells and report any discomfort unless it’s a life threatening one!

A woman is expected to mould herself to the tune of her surroundings, yet maintain her dignity and identity. A life of a woman challenges her body and mind, be it the “hormonal changes” every month due to her menstrual cycles, accepting changes in her body during pregnancy and lactation and most importantly the effects of menopause on her body and brain.

All these major events make her vulnerable biologically and certain other events such as growing up in line with the expectations of the society for being a girl child, culture shock during marriage, several instances that squeeze her into a trap of guilt and lack of a “say” when it comes to rearing her child. These instances make her more vulnerable psychologically, put her at a risk for mental illnesses.

Because of which, a woman is twice more susceptible to many psychological issues compared to a man.

Women experience higher rates of mental illness compared to men. W.H.O. states that 1 in 3 women suffer from some kind of a mental health issue.  In fact, around 1 in 6 women in the world experience depression and 1 in 3 women will experience anxiety during their lifetime and most importantly, suicide is the leading cause of death amongst postpartum women.

Unfortunately, women’s mental health is not taken seriously by many others in our societies!

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

Women in their reproductive years experience transient mood and physical changes just before or during their menstruation.  Most often, they experience only mild discomfort, and symptoms do not interfere with their personal, social, or professional lives; however, 5% to 8% of women have moderate-to-severe symptoms that can cause significant distress and functional impairment. PMDD is in part attributable to luteal phase abnormalities in seretonergic activity. Deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals including vitamin D, Vitamin B, calcium and magnesium also play a major role.

Perinatal period starts from the day of conception to one year mark post delivery of the infant. According to researchers, women are more prone to psychiatric disorders especially depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, OCD and anxiety disorders. Pregnancy and post partum period owing to several hormonal fluctuations, a woman is susceptible to risk of relapse or new onset psychiatric illnesses.
